Description
English: John Watts (1755-1801)

London: Stockdale, 8 December, 1789. Stipple engraving, 230 x 180 mm. (plate size)

Engraved portrait of John Watts, veteran of Cook's third voyage, who sailed with the First Fleet on board Lady Penrhyn. Although published by Stockdale and intended to be included in Governor Phillip's account of New South Wales, it is only rarely seen in the first edition because it was issued too late to be included in most copies (Phillip's account was officially published on 3 December 1789, while this portrait is dated 8 December).
