Frontispiece print from an engraved portrait of James Aitken, commonly called John Aitken and John the Painter, in chains in jail, by W. Cave ad viv del [W. Cave drew this from life]. Published by John Wilkes (printer) on March 22, 1777. JCB Archive of Early American Images, The John Carter Brown Library at Brown University. Note: An impassioned supporter of the American Revolution, James Aitken, also known by other names, wished to attack the British Navy by burning down royal navy yards in Portsmouth and Bristol. He was eventually captured and executed for his activities.
