Informal photo of Lafayette Escadrille member James Norman Hall (1887-1951), in uniform and kepi, smoking cigarette in 1917, caption written under image reads, "Harvard '10-11 Private, 9th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, British Army, August 18, 1914 to Dec. 1, 1915. Enlisted private Foreign Legion, French Army, Oct. 11, 1916; received training at School of Military Aviation Buc and Avord Oct. 16, 1916 to June 14, 1917; breveted pilot April 23; assigned to N 124 Jule 16; shot down and wounded June 26; transferred to Squadron Spad 112 Sept. 22; to Squadron N 124 Oct. 3; honorably discharged Feb 18, 1918. Commission captain Aviation Section, Signal Corps Feb. 7, 1918; assigned 103d Pursuit Squadron, 3rd Pursuit Group, Lst Army, Feb. 18; wounded and taken prisoner May 7; released from prison in Nov.; returned to the U.S. March 5, 1919. Engagements cooperated in: Aisne, Verdun, Vosger, and Chapagne sector. Credited with 3 planes."
