Summary

Description

At the NSB open session on May 6, 2015, board members and staff, NSF leaders and staff, and the public heard presentations from the 2015 Alan T. Waterman and Vannevar Bush award recipients. James Duderstadt, president emeritus and University Professor of science and engineering at the University of Michigan, received the 2015 Vannevar Bush Award. In his presentation, Duderstadt traced efforts to ensure adequate investment in American R&D and education over the last 30 years, and noted a lack of progress since the publication of the report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm. “The gathering storm increasingly appears to be a category 5,” he said. He talked about a need to reengage with the public, and particularly, its elected representatives. “This reengagement is essential to make the case for enlightened federal science policies and strong support,” Duderstadt said. Find out more about the NSB’s selection of Duderstadt for the Vannevar Bush Award in this NSF press release.
