Relationship Status Details Notable examples
Countries which have key military, strategic and economic relations with India* India has either purchased/sold military hardware and/or held major military exercises and/or operates military bases in these countries. Includes key allies like Russia, Israel, France, United Kingdom, United States and Singapore. Russia is the largest supplier arms to India's military followed by Israel. India operates a military base in Tajikistan.
Countries which have Key strategic and economic relations with India** India shares key strategic and economic interests with these countries and also has a certain level of military relationship with some of them. India has held major military exercises with Australia and Japan. The economic and strategic cooperation between India and other major developing nations, such as Brazil, Mexico and Russia, is exemplified by various international organizations and summits such as the BRIC nations, the IBSA forum and the G20 nations. Certain countries have key economic interests with India. For example, Jindal Steel's US$2.5 billion investments in Bolivia, Indian government's large petroleum projects in Venezuela, and large investments by Korean and Japanese firms in India. Examples of military cooperation include sale of HAL Dhruv to Peru and Ecuador and Indian Army training camp in Uzbekistan. In addition, presence of large Indian diaspora has had a positive influence on India's relations with Arab states of the Persian Gulf.
Countries which have favorable relations with India*** These countries do not have a history of explicitly taking an anti-India stance and have good diplomatic, cultural and economic relations with India. India also has a certain level of strategic and military partnership with some of these countries. Notable examples include members of the African Union which have had strong, historic relations with India.
Countries which have major border/territorial disputes and/or have fought wars with India since it gained independence**** Though India has military and strategic rivalry with these nations, economic and cultural links do exist. India has major territorial disputes with Pakistan and People's Republic of China. Despite a long-standing dispute over Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh, China is India's largest trading partner. Border disputes between India and Bangladesh have strained bilateral relations even though India secured Bangladesh's independence during the Bangladesh Liberation War.
