Es ist,wie wenn das Eis in einer Meeresbucht infolge heftigen Seeganges inStücke geborstenund das Ganzedann plötzlich er-starrt wäre. Indiesen Lavaströ-men befinden sichviele Spalten undHöhlen, indem die flüssige Masse unter der abgekühlten Überfläche weitergeströmt ist.Die berühmteste dieser Höhlen ist Surtshellir (d. h. Höhle des Feuer-riesen Surtr), die etwa 1500 Meter lang ist. Es gibt auf Island drei Formen von Vulkanen: kegelförmige,ziemlich steil ansteigend, die aus aufeinander folgenden Schichtenvon Asche, Schlacke und Lava zusammengesetzt sind; ferner Lava-kuppen, grosse Vulkane mit geringer Steigung, die ganz aus Lava auf-gebaut sind und an der Spitze einen grossen Kraterschlund haben,sowie endlich lange Kraterreihen mit vielen kleinen Kratern, derenLängsrichtung durch Erdspalten bedingt ist.
