Description When the Highway 17 expressway bypassed Garden River in 2008, Ontario renumbered the old route as Highway 638. The Garden Rivers first nations insisted that the province change it to 17B in order to maintain traffic along the route. When the province refused, the first nations placed their own signs along the highway and removed the provincial signs. The province eventually conceded and officially redesignated the road as Highway 17B in 2009.
