English: *Original source: The photo was published in 1955, but sources differ on the publication. According to Outlaw Journalist (2008) by William McKeen, it was published in the yearbook of the Louisville Male High School. According to Hunter: The Strange and Savage Life of Hunter S. Thompson (1993) by E. Jean Carroll, the portrait appeared in The Spectator, a student literary magazine published by the Athenaeum Literary Association, a long-running association/club at the Louisville Male High School. Both may be true.

English: No permission is required because the portrait was published in the U.S. prior to 1964 and copyright was not renewed. Whether it was printed in the Louisville Male High School yearbook or The Spectator, there are no matching renewals in the Copyright Catalog (1978–present). As a result, the copyright expired and the photograph entered the public domain on January 1, 1984. The reproduction in Outlaw Journalist is not subject to copyright because it is a photocopy of the underlying public domain work.
