Description
English: Detail of a portrait of Hugh Squier (1625-1710), benefactor of South Molton, who founded a Free Scool in South Molton in 1684. By unknown artist. Purchased in 1796 by South Molton Town Council from a certain Mrs May, and today hangs from the chain of office of the Mayor of South Molton. In 1799 a large oil on canvas copy (74cm * 60cm) was made by a certain Mr Whitby and now hangs in the Mayor's Parlour of the Guildhall, South Molton. In 1910 a stone bust of Hugh Squier based on either the miniature or the copy painting was placed in an aedicule on the facade iof the Guildhall, where it remains today.
