Summary

Description
English: Hospital of the Holy Cross, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury. The buildings are dated 1853, but the hospital (almshouses) was founded earlier by John Woodburne. They are built of squared red sandstone rubble with plain tiled roofs, in domestic Gothic style. It is still "... for the residence of poor women aged 55 years or over who profess the Christian faith in accordance with the principles of one of the Protestant denominations...." The letters G (or C?) R on the gateway are puzzling.
