English: Portrait of 2/400186 Private (Pte) Horace William (Slim) Madden GC, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), of Cronulla, NSW. Madden served in World War II during the New Guinea and Bougainville campaigns, and during the Korean War. Captured by Chinese Communists in 1951, he was awarded the George Cross for his heroic conduct in defying his captors as a Prisoner of War. He died due to his poor treatment by his captors which led to malnutrition and his eventual death in late November/early December 1951. Photograph taken in 1947.
