He was for four years an influential member of the Illinois Legis-lature. Holding the most advanced views as to the rights of women, he has,throughout his long and useful life, bent every energy and labored in season andout of season, in whatever position he might occupy, to do all in his power toadvance this interest. His varied career in many fields of activity may be appreciated by brieflyrecounting the many positions he has filled. On the 30th of July, 1848, he wascommissioned by Governor French as Second Lieutenant in the One Hundredand Ninth Regiment Illinois Militia; he took part in the organization of theAmerican Woman Suffrage Association; was chairman of the Arms and TrophyDepartment of the Northwestern Sanitary Commission and Soldiers HomeFair of 1865, which made nearly half a million for the needy soldiers; presidentof the Soldiers Home Board; one of the founders of the Union League Cluband president of its first board of directors; president of the Chicago Rifle Club; 354
