The increasing heat of summer com-pelled the retreat of the ice from the Ken-tucky shore, where Covington and Newportnow lie, and so lowered its surface that itfell below the previous out-flow point. Thewaters then took their course over the dam,instead of passing, as formerly, up the Lick-ing and down the Kentucky river valleys.The spectacle of a great ice-cascade, or oflong ice-rapids, was then exhibited at Cin-cinnati.
