Houghton Library, Harvard Library, Harvard University Photographic Album portraying Herbert Pollitt, Female Impersonator. England, ca. 1865-1895. 1 album: 28 p. with 50 mounted photographs. Date: 1865-1895. Pollitt is depicted in this album in female costume. The album is covered in light brown cloth and has the initials H.I.P. written in ink on the cover. Also in ink on the cover is the title: "The Premiere Beddeuge Sally Hardlake, nais Margaret Bellingham, the Golden Chrysis." Pollitt's bookplate is glued to the inside cover. The plate is initialed AB and is in the style of Aubrey Beardsley. Scope and Contents: Album contains photographs of Pollitt in female dress, mainly cabinet cards by the following photographers: Scott & Wilkinson of Cambridge (26 photographs) J. Palmer Clark (9 photographs) Mendelson (8 photographs) J. H. On the bottom, is "Scott & Wilkinson, Cambridge," which looks to have been a photography studio working in Cambridge (UK) in the 19th century. If that is sufficient for you, you might just want to use that image. I don't see any reason why that would not be in the public domain, as these photos are all from the 19th century, and should not have any copyright associated with them. Scott & Wilkinson, Cambridge. SCOTT & Wilkinson 47 St Andrew's Street, Cambridge Reeve notes that photographers from the firm were present to record the Prince of Wales receiving an honorary degree in 1892 and the town's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 1897. According to a 'Norfolk Chronicle' report of 21st November 1908 (discovered by Paul Godfrey), the partnership was founded in the early 1880s and dissolved by mutual agreement towards the end of the decade. Edgar Wilkinson subsequently worked in Manchester and Norwich. The dates of the partnership, recalled some years later, may not be accurate, but it is clear that Wilkinson's name remained above the door long after he had left the business. |
