Notes on date[edit]

Notes on a cached National Portrait Gallery page date this image to "c. 1600" [1]. Southampton's lovelock is certainly longer than in the Nicholas Hilliard portrait miniature dated to 1594 [2], and the clothing is a better match to 1600 than 1594. The "1573" in the original image name is Southampton's year of birth.
