Description September 21, 1952. The second ISTAF in Olympic year attracted 15,000 spectators to the Olympic Stadium. The greatest cheers were for the German long distance runner Helmut Gude following his storming run in the 5,000m where he trailed Gordon Pirie by 50 metres before cutting back the lead to be right behind the Briton’s as the fans cheered him on, overhauling him at the start of the final lap to win in 14:16.0.
