DescriptionHawk Littlejohn Eagle Head profile and turquoise inlays.jpg
English: A short distance from the "Bird of Prey" head are four burned-in “Direction Holes” that honor the four directions of East, South, West, and North. Between each Direction Hole and the Bird of Prey head is a circle of inlaid ebony wood. Each ebony inlay contains an additional inlay of a small round piece of turquoise set in its center. These four inlaid direction holes may imbue the flute with a spiritual component based on the maker’s intention(s). Besides honoring the four directions - "Direction Holes" are also used to configure the flute to a desired pitch when all of the flute’s sound holes are closed.
