Summary

Description The remains of HMS Namur, 1,814 tons, 90 gun Second Rate, at Chatham Historic Dockyard, 17 February 2020. Launched in 1756 at Chatham Royal Dockyard to the specifications of the 1745 Establishment as amended in 1750 under the auspices of Surveyor of the Navy William Bately. Her original armament was 26 x 32 pdrs on the Lower Gun Deck, 26 x 18 pdrs on the Middle Gun Deck, 26 x 12 pdrs on the Upper Gun Deck, 10 x 6pdrs on the Quarterdeck and 2 x 6 pdrs on the Forecastle. In 1804 she was razeed to a 74 gun Third Rate. In 1807 she was reduced to harbour service and broken up in 1833, her timbers being used to support the floor of the wheelwrights workshop in Chatham Dockyard. They were rediscovered in 1995. A long lived ship which saw much action in several wars.
