Summary

Description

George Bartle, who was the seal caretaker from 1852-99 (the longest serving custodian in State Department history), alongside the Great Seal of the United States and its press. Drawn by William Allen Rogers for the March 1878 Harper’s Magazine.

The press was a product made by R. Hoe & Company, first called "Leviathan" and later the "Inca press", and its design was inspired by American interest in Peru during the 1840s and 1850s. The company began making the product in 1854, and it is unknown when the U.S. Government purchased its copy (possibly in 1866, when a counterdie was first employed, necessitating a new press). This press was replaced in 1877, before the Harpers article was even published, when a newer die was made. (Information from The Eagle and the Shield, Patterson 1978.)
