Summary

Description Graveyard of St Peter's Arthington, Wharfedale, West Yorkshire, England. Showing south or left side of gravestone of sculptor Matthew Taylor (1837-1889), which lies near the north-east corner of the church. The two statues on the gravestone are almost destroyed by weathering. All that remains to demonstrate the quality of the sculpture are the legs and feet of this figure. It was probably carved by Matthew's artist-sculptor son Francis Bertram Taylor (1868-1950), or his sculptor friend Benjamin Payler of Leeds; most likely Payler, as Francis would have barely completed his apprenticeship when his father died. Another possibility is that it was carved by John Wormald Appleyard who did produce Roman-type legs like this.
