Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) George Harrison (album)
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) The image is the most widely distributed photo from Harrison's press conference for his 1979 self-titled album. It was the artist's first US press conference since the start of his ill-fated 1974 tour and illustrates his contentment and lightheartedness, which were qualities that informed the album's creation and contrasted starkly with Harrison's demeanour in 1974. The photo also reflects the media's goodwill towards Harrison at this time, which was similarly reflected in the critical reception afforded the album, particularly relative to his music over 1974–75. Further to specific commentary in the text discussing the press conference, and to earlier description of Harrison's recent acceptance of the Beatles' legacy, Harrison is shown covering his ears in response to the inevitable media questions concerning a possible Beatles reunion, nine years after their break-up in 1979.
Not replaceable with
free media because
(WP:NFCC#1)
The artist died in 2001 at the age of 58. No known free illustration of this meeting exists, nor of any interaction between Harrison and the press during this era, and nor could such an image be created, given Harrison's death and the present age of the journalists.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) The file will only be used in this album article, specifically in a section dedicated to the album's release and promotion. The full image is needed to aid the reader's understanding of the commentary supplied in the article. Apart from the album cover that helps visually the subject in the article infobox, this is the only non-free image used in the article. The file has been saved at a low resolution sufficient for a reader's recognition of its content.
Respect for
commercial opportunities
(WP:NFCC#2)
The image is used in an encyclopedic article, specifically in a section dedicated to the work's release and promotion. It will not compete with the owner's potential commercial interest as it is being used and presented solely in a historical context and with third-party commentary to support the contextual significance. The image appears with the author/owner credit as supplied at the source website. The reduced size ensures that the image is of inferior quality to that available at the newspaper website; it would not therefore compete with or harm the author/owner's commercial interest by providing a quality alternative to that version.
