English: This panoramic view of the temples at Girnar near Junagadh in Gujarat was taken by F. Nelson in the 1890s from the Lee-Warner Collection: 'Photographs of Junagadh'. The holy Girnar mountain rises more than 900 metres above the plain in the outskirts of Junagadh. It is particularly sacred to the Jains and was an important pilgrimage centre since the third century BC as indicated by the inscriptions on a boulder with the edicts of the emperor Ashoka and the proclamations of a Kshatrapa and a Gupta ruler. The mountain is particularly sacred to the Jains but there are also several Hindu temples and a Muslim shrine. At a height of about 650 metres there is a group of sixteen Jain sanctuaries dedicated to Neminatha which constitute a temple city with enclosures called 'tuks'. The temples were built in the 12th-13th centuries during the Solanki period and in later centuries.
