Summary

Description
English: Flood warning tower in St. Veit an der Triesting, built at about 1829, was used as a warning system for the canal leaving river Triesting here. When a flood was coming down the river, the rising water causes a bell in the roof of the tower to ring. Then the weir was opened and the industrial areal of Neufeldt was not flooded. The tower was renovated in 2004 and is a cultural heritage monument now.

Das Alter des Turmes ist nicht genau bekannt. Bei den Renovierungsarbeiten ist man auf die eingravierte Jahreszahl 1829 gestoßen, was mit den Überlieferungen übereinstimmt. Neben dem Turm wurde früher die Triesting durch ein Wehr aufgestaut. Von dort führte ein Kanal in das Fabriksareal Neufeldt. Bei Ansteigen des Wasserspiegels floss das Wasser aus dem Kanal in die Öffnung am Fuße des Turmes und betätigte ein darin montiertes Wasserrad. Dieses brachte eine Glocke im Dach des Turmes zum Läuten. So wusste man, dass die Schleussen des Wehrs geöffnet werden mussten. Eine Überflutung des Werksgeländes Neufeldt konnte somit vermieden werden.

Nachdem der Turm viele Jahre mit Efeu bewachsen in Vergessenheit geraten war, restaurierten Lehrkörper und Elternverein der Volksschule St. Veit mit Unterstützung der Stadtgemeinde Berndorf im Jahre 2004 dieses alte Bauwerk.
