"Das Gemälde Die Entführung der Europa (1908) von Félix Vallotton (1865–1925) ist eines der Hauptwerke des «Lieblingskünstlers» aus der ehemaligen Sammlung Hahnloser. Hans R. Hahnloser, der Sohn des Sammlerpaares, der ab 1934 Ordinarius für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Bern und Stiftungsratsmitglied des Kunstmuseums Bern war, schenkte es 1946 dem Kunstmuseum. Der Sage nach entführt Zeus, verwandelt in einen Stier, die schöne Europa vom Ufer des heutigen Süd-Libanon und schwimmt mit ihr auf dem Rücken bis Kreta. Gemäss einer göttlichen Verheissung trägt dieser Erdteil fortan ihren Namen. Vallotton beschäftigte sich seit der Jahrhundertwende verstärkt mit mythologischen Themen, wobei es ihm weniger um die sagenhaften Geschichten ging, als vielmehr um eine ironische Distanz zu den Motiven und die Möglichkeit, allgemeingültige Aussagen zu machen. Die weibliche Figur, der Stier und das violette Meer sind stilisiert und veranschaulichen den Bruch mit dem unmittelbar Irdischen."
