Summary

Description
English: Faroese chain dance (folkdance) in the village Sumba, which is the southernmost village in Suðuroy and in the Faroe Islands. The people from Sumba have strong traditions regarding the Faroese chain dance (føroyskur dansur) and with the tradition with singing "kvæði" folk songs (the folk songs accompany the dance as the only music, no instruments are used). At the beginning of the Lent period they have traditions with dancing Faroese chain dance and also to hit a very strong barrel. They have made the barrel so strong that it last for 5-6 hours or so. Every now and then they go up to the dancing hall (Dansistovan) next to the church and dance the chain dance and then back again to hit the barrel. The men have one barrel and the women have one. The have special costumes in the same colours as the Faroese flag Merkið: White, red and blue. This photo was taken on 5 February 2011 inside Dansistovan (the dance hall).

Dansk: Fastelavn i Sumba, Færøerne.
