Summary
| Description | The purpose of off-axis illumination is shown through this imaging example. The illustrated pattern to be imaged has two pitches, a smaller vertical pitch ps and a larger horizontal one pl. On-axis light would not form any image due to only the zeroth order being passed through the final lens, whereas a targeted off-axis illumination (red) would shift the diffraction pattern so that three orders can form an image with good depth of focus (DOF), due to the symmetry of placement within the lens. The separation between orders is strictly λ/pl horizontally and λ/ps vertically, but every other order is skipped in the horizontal and vertical directions because the fundamental lattice vector is actually diagonal. |
