Summary

Description
English: As seen in June 2020: the Evans Bank branch at 5178 Main Street, Amherst, New York, began its life as a church, and it's today the oldest extant religious building in Erie County (1834). The Reformed Mennonite Church of Williamsville served an Anabaptist community that was once the largest in the area, and counted among its members such founding families of Amherst as the Longs, Reists, Hersheys, and Fogelsongers. It was a one-room edifice with a wood-shingled roof and walls of Onondaga limestone sourced from the Fogelsonger quarry, the austere Greek Revival design of the building nonetheless includes subtle features such as quoins on the corners of its façade, cornice returns on the front gable, and splayed lintels crowning the narrow windows. The congregation disbanded in 1981, and the building spent the period from 1985 until 2009 housing the Town of Amherst's archives. The building was purchased in 2012 by Evans Bank and converted to a retail branch bank, the 14th in the chain; in accordance with its status as a National Register of Historic places-listed property as well as a town-level Designated Historic Property, restorations were undertaken in a historically sensitive manner despite the demolition of an 1880s-era wood-frame addition to the west side of the building. Evans Bank also constructed a modern addition to the rear of the building, housing offices and an drive-through teller window.
