Español: Escudo de armas de La Serena, Chile. Diseñado en base a decreto real del Emperador Carlos I de España, disponible aquí, con fecha 26 de agosto de 1549.
El Escudo de Armas de la ciudad de la Serena consiste en un castillo que hace de jefe en campo de argen o color plata con cuatro torreones arrojando llamas de las almenas. Sobre la bordadura aparecen cuatro F F y en sus ángulos haces de cuatro saetas invertidas. Sus soportes son dos grifos, haciendo presa de un eslabon.
El significado del escudo corresponde a una suerte de arenga conteniendo diversos elementos relacionados a la defensa o resguardo. El castillo en llamas no recuerda la destrucción de la villa de La Serena por indígenas en 1549 ,ni los daños provocados por el pirata Sharp en 1680, sino la defensa de la ciudad y la gallardía o presteza de sus habitantes, tal como se puede ver en el escudo de las ciudades de Dublin y Oteiza; en los escudos de los apellidos Valdivieso, Gallo y Rodriguez Castrillón. Respecto a los grifos que forman un eslabón y soportan el escudo podemos describirlos como animales mitológicos que resguardan tesoros, convencionalmente representan la fuerza, el valor y la vigilancia. Sus cuerpos están conformados por los animales mas poderosos del cielo y la tierra, mitad águila y mitad león. En torno al borde del escudo podemos encontrar dos elementos, las flechas amarradas que simbolizan las tribus indigenas sometidas a la corona española y letras "f" posiblemente del futuro rey, Felipe II.
