Summary

Description
English: Map of the traditional counties of England showing the number of heraldic visitations carried out in each county by the official Kings of Arms.    ■Note that Monmouthshire, at the time considered an English county, but now considered part of Wales, is not shown. One visitation of Monmouthshire was carried out. One visitation of the city of Chester was also carried out (not shown). The approximate location of London, in which four visitations were carried out, is indicated by a dot of the appropriate colour.
Background
Heraldic Visitations were tours of inspection undertaken by Kings of Arms in England, Wales and Ireland in order to regulate and register the coats of arms of nobility and gentry and boroughs, and to record pedigrees. They took place from 1530 to 1688, and their records provide important source material for genealogists.
