Description
A copy of one of the four large paintings Eckersberg made for the castle Christiansborg. For many years it was beleived to be one of Eckersberg's studies for the paintings, but an analysis in 2013 concluded that it was not a work by Eckersberg, but instead a copy by Rørbye, as mentioned in the estate sale of Eckersberg in 1854. The study it was confused with (Hannover's list no. 240), was auctioned by Bruun Rasmussen in auction 658, February 23, 1999, no. 265, and has not been heard of since. The experts at Statens Museum for Kunst assumed that Rørbye saw the large painting in 1825-26 in the painting room at Charlottenborg, where Eckersberg was a professor at the Academy and Rørbye was a student.
