SEPA 1012 DV01It is "giant" foraminifera 4 cm tall that resemble and imitate carnivorous sponge aspect and behavior. It belongs to the genus Spiculosiphon. There is only one species of this genus known in the world (in Norway). This is the second one found worldwide and the first in the Mediterranean sea.Specialists from the Superior Council of Scientific Researches in Spain want to publish a paper and they would like to call the species Spiculosiphon oceana, honoring the "discoverers".The species was found on top a Mediterranean seamount (Palos seamount) at -153 meters.Scientific paper in Zootaxa 3669 (4): 571-584. 2013: A giant foraminifer that converges to the feeding strategy of carnivorous sponges: sp. nov.
