Description

This is the front cover art from Issue 1 (September–October 1986) of the magazine Dungeon Adventures, a role-playing game adventure periodical originally published by TSR, Inc. and edited by Roger E. Moore. The cover of this particular issue is a reproduction of the painting titled "Into the Fire" by Keith Parkinson. The magazine cover art copyright is believed to belong to Wizards of the Coast, successor-in-interest to TSR, Inc.

Source

The image is derived from a digital capture (photo/scan) of the magazine cover. The creator of this digital version is irrelevant as the copyright in all equivalent images, whether appearing here for the purposes described below or elsewhere, is still held by the same party, that being the original owner, artist, or publisher. Claimed as fair use regardless.

Portion used

The entire front cover, comprising a relatively small portion of the commercial product as a whole. Because the image is the cover of a particular issue of a magazine, a form of product packaging, the entire image is needed to identify the product, properly convey the meaning and branding intended, and avoid tarnishing or misrepresenting the image.

Low resolution?

The copy is of sufficient resolution for identification and commentary but lower resolution than the original magazine cover. Copies made from it will be of inferior quality, unsuitable as artwork on pirate versions or other uses that would compete with the commercial purpose of the original artwork.

Other information

The use of this magazine cover will not affect the value of the original work or the body of work to which it belongs, neither will it infringe upon the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original. In particular, copies of this image could not be used to produce or distribute illegal copies of this or any other issue of the magazine's primary content in part or whole, whether for personal use or purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain, to the detriment of the original copyright holder.

Dungeon (magazine)

Purpose of use

The image serves as the primary means of visual identification of the premiere issue of the periodical Dungeon Adventures (please refer to above description for further detail). Accordingly, it is used in the infobox of the article about the magazine to reference both the issue in particular and the magazine in general.
The image makes a significant contribution to the user's understanding of the article which could not practically be conveyed by words alone. Use for this purpose does not compete with the purposes of the original work, namely the magazine cover creator's ability to provide illustration or design services, or the publisher's ability to market this or any other issue of the magazine to the public.

Replaceable?

As a magazine cover, the image is not replaceable by free content; any other image that shows the packaging of the magazine would also be copyrighted, and any version that is not true to the original would be inadequate for identification or commentary. This use is in accordance with Wikipedia image use policy.
