Summary

Description
English: Photomicrograph of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve (DmX; highlighted in the circle) in a transverse section along the upper medulla (Image-1 of the sequence). The second image is a higher magnification (10x) of the same nucleus showing clusters of neuronal cells; Stain used : Luxol fast blue.

The third image is a 10x magnification of the DmX of the same section stained with an antibody to the protein alpha-synuclein. This highlights the abnormally deposited protein, alpha synuclein seen as part of intraneuronal "inclusion bodies" called Lewy bodies found commonly in conditions like Parkinson's disease and Lewy body related dementia. DmX is one of the earliest sites affected by synuclein deposition in Parkinson's disease.

Legend: 1 - DmX, 2- Hypoglossal nerve nucleus, 3 - Fourth ventricle, 4- Medial longitudinal fasciculus, 5- Central medullary nuclei.
