Description
Deutsch: [Originalbeschreibung] Die Martinsburg erhielt ihren Namen durch Kurfürst Diether von Isenburg nach dem mainzer Stiftspatron Martinus. Sie stand unmittelbar vor dem alten Schlossbau im jetzigen Freihafen. Kurfürst Diether erbaute sie im Jahre 1478 gröstentheils aus Holz als seine Residenz. Da sie aber im Jahre 1481 abbrannte, liess er dieselbe aus Quatersteinen erbauen und gab ihr die Festigkeit einer Ritterburg, aus Furcht vor einem Übnerfall der mainzer Bürger wegen seines unrechtlichen Verfahren. Kurfürst von Erthal liess sei im Jahre 1774 mit dem alten Schlossbau durch einen Gang verbinden und wählte sie als den schönsten Theil des kurfürstlichen Schlosses zu seiner Wohnung. Im Jahre 1807 wurde sie niedergerissen und ihre Steine wurden zum Quai des Freihafen verwendet.
