Object history
Deutsch: Von der Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts bis in das 19. Jahrhundert hinein zeigten die Siegel der Stadt die Mitra aus dem Wappen des Klosters, seit 1460 Stifts Ellwangen, dessen gefürstete Vorsteher die Vogtei über die Stadt ausübten. Nach der Säkularisation des Stifts und dem Übergang der Stadt an Württemberg in den Jahren 1802/1803 übernahm diese das Wappen des französischen Bistums Langres, wie es schon seit dem Ende des Mittelalters als apokryphes Wappen der Klostergründer Hariolf und Erlolf, die beide Bischöfe von Langres gewesen sind, im Stift Ellwangen dargestellt worden war. Von diesem Wappen wurden die der Farbregel nicht entsprechenden Flaggenfarben abgeleitet.
