Summary

Description
English: Antenna "G1" at Hörby Shortwave Station| near Hörby in the south of Sweden operated by the Swedish national broadcasting service Sveriges Radio. This is a curtain antenna, consisting of 16 horizontal wire half wave dipole antennas suspended in a 4x4 rectangular array, in front of a plane reflector consisting of a screen of many parallel horizontal wires. These are suspended from support wires stretching between the two steel masts. This antenna is used to broadcast to large areas thousands of miles away, around the curve of the Earth, by skywave ("skip") propagation. It radiates a powerful beam of radio waves at a shallow angle into the sky, where it is reflected back to Earth by the ionosphere beyond the horizon.

Each of the vertical columns of 4 dipoles is fed by a separate transmission line, which can be seen exiting down at an angle at the center of each column.

Hoerby shortwave station, operated by the national broadcasting organization Sveriges Radio (Radio Sweden) was shut down 30 October 2010 due to a decision to concentrate on internet broadcasting.

  • Changes - to bring out aerial wires against the sky, which were not visible in the original photo, the brightness and contrast were enhanced with GIMP. Then the edges were extracted from the image with the Laplace filter, and added to the image.
