Summary

Description
English: Cowgatehead from Candlemaker Row The church building in the foreground was the Free Church, Cowgate, built in 1861 and now used as a social welfare centre. The spire beyond belongs to the Assembly Hall, built in 1842-44 to house the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. It became Tolbooth-St. John's (or the 'Highland Church' because of its Gaelic services) before its closure in 1979 and later conversion to an Edinburgh Festival information centre. It is now called 'the Hub'.
