Description
English: The historical coat of arms of Békés County.
Magyar: Békés vármegye címere.
Békés vármegye területén valószínűleg a 11–13. században jött létre comitatus, amelynek központja a Fehér- és Fekete-Körös találkozásánál épült királyi vár – várispánsági székhely –, Békés lett. A történelem folyamán a békési vár fokozatosan veszített a jelentőségéből, szerepét Gyula vára vette át mint főispáni székhely. Területét az 1877. évi I. törvénycikk rendezte véglegesen. Békés vármegye címeres pecsétjét III. Károly adományozta 1724-ben, majd V. Ferdinánd látta el magyar nyelvű körirattal 1836-ban: BÉKÉS ~ VÁRME-GYE ~ PECSÉTJE 1836. A csücskös talpú, reneszánsz pajzs hasított. A jobb oldali mezőben hármas halmon balra fordult, ágaskodó, kétfarkú oroszlán látható, jobb mellső lábával három búzakalászt tart, bal mellső lábával szablyát emel. Az oroszlán kiöltött nyelvű, feje fölött zárt fejedelmi korona lebeg. A pajzs bal oldali mezejében három pólya látszik, jelképezve ezzel a vármegye három fő folyóját, a Fehér-Köröst, a Fekete-Köröst és a Sebes-Köröst. A címert felül nyitott levélkorona zárja le.
Az eredeti címerben az oroszlán feje felett a Szent Korona lebegett, azonban V. Ferdinánd utasítására ezt lecserélték a vármegye ispánjának leveles koronájára.

This file depicts the official coat of arms or flag of a Hungarian municipality. According to 1.§ (4) of the Hungarian copyright law (1999./LXXVI.), copyright protection does not cover "legal provisions, other means of state direction, court and other official resolutions, announcements and documents issued by an authority or other official organ, as well as standards made obligatory by law and other similar regulations." Official coat of arms and flags, being defined in such a regulation, are thus in the public domain in Hungary, and also in the US, according to § 313.6(C)(2) Compendium of U.S. Copyright Office Practices, 3rd ed. 2014 (Compendium (Third)): "As a matter of longstanding public policy, the U.S. Copyright Office will not register a government edict that has been issued by any state, local, or territorial government, including legislative enactments, judicial decisions, administrative rulings, public ordinances, or similar types of official legal materials. Likewise, the Office will not register a government edict issued by any foreign government or any translation prepared by a government employee acting within the course of his or her official duties."

Note: The usage of coats of arms and flags is governed by legal restrictions, independent of the copyright status of the depiction shown here.

Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States. Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Jamaica has 95 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Honduras has a general copyright term of 75 years, but it does implement the rule of the shorter term. Copyright may extend on works created by French who died for France in World War II (more information), Russians who served in the Eastern Front of World War II (known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) and posthumously rehabilitated victims of Soviet repressions (more information).

Insignia This image shows a flag, a coat of arms, a seal or some other official insignia. The use of such symbols is restricted in many countries. These restrictions are independent of the copyright status.
