Description

Postcard of the Clock Tower and Portland stone drinking fountain given to the town in 1888 by London Alderman Col. Horatio Davies, who became Lord Mayor of London. The drinking fountain is now in a sunken garden opposite Telford Terrace on the sea front. The third Herne Bay Pier is in the background.

Points of interest
  • The photo can be dated at 1910 because the Grand Pier Pavilion, built in 1910, is still under construction at the back.
  • The old fog-warning guns from the first pier are not yet on the steps of the Clock Tower.
  • A poster near the Clock Tower advertises the Jollity Boys who used to perform on the roof at King's Hall - you have to zoom in to see this.
  • The engraved dedication to Ann Thwaytes (who paid for the Clock Tower) is visible on the canopy over the door.
Date (postcard is postmarked 1911).
