Summary[edit]

Chemin des Dames Déc. 1917 "UN CLAiRON".Comité des Étudiants Américains de l'École des Beaux-Arts Paris post card numbered 33555.artist not yet identified.WWI postcard art. A drawing of a World War I Poilu, a soldier of the French Army, in full battle-dress with steel helmet, pack, & rifle, holding a bugle; he is standing on open ground (presumably on the Chemin des Dames). Dated December (or November; the dates of the 2 front inscriptions appear to conflict) 1917. Miniature drawing/painting, pencil, colours (watercolour and/or coloured pencil/crayon), & ink; created on a standard, printed 'The Comité des Étudiants Américains de l'École des Beaux-Arts Paris guarantee the authenticity of this post card', post-card blank. There is a rectangular marking around the full perimeter of the postcard, near the edge of the paper, showing a colour-difference between the edge & the main body of the card. The paper seems to be darker "inside" this rectangular perimeter, and the colouring is particularly strong along the "edge" of the marking. It does not seem to be an intentional part of the design, and appears to be a discolouration of the paper, possibly caused by some former matte or other framing of the image, & the difference in exposure conditions of the paper that this would have caused. It is unclear what exactly caused the staining, and whether the postcard was kept in a picture frame, an album, or etc. The artwork was Created by 'D__nier? O___y?'; signed on front. Full front caption reads as follows: 'Chemin des Dames | Déc. 1917 | "UN CLAiRON"' in ink @ lower centre-right, & 'aux armées.11.17 | D__nier? O___y? in pencil @ bottom-right. Back with only the handwritten number '33555' added, at bottom centre, to the standard printed design & text. Created in 1917. More information about the artist would be appreciated. Wittig collection, item 53; private collection, fam. Wittig et cie.
