Summary

Description
English: Charles Vanderhoop, Jr.(on left), with a group of students from the island's Chilmark School. Charles was born in the previously attached Gay Head Light Keeper's house while his father, Charles W. Vanderhoop, was Principal Lighthouse Keeper from 1920-1933. Charles enjoyed enthralling island school children with his childhood stories about helping his father care for the Gay Head Lighthouse when it was illuminated by whale oil. Vineyard Environmental Research, Institute (VERI) took control of the Gay Head Light property via USCG license in 1985. "Lighthouse Park" was created in 1989 after VERI enclosed the grounds surrounding the lighthouse with a post and rail fence and installed an access gate. The new fence and gate prevented trespassers from climbing and damaging the fragile clay cliffs for beach access - which was an age-old tradition. Charles Vanderhoop, Jr., served as an Assistant Keeper at the Gay Head Light from 1986 to 1990. Photo by: Principal Lighthouse Keeper: William Waterway Marks
