Signe et daté "1819" (en bas à gauche) Huile sur toile 55 x 45,5 cm.

Selon la légende, Gabrielle de Vergy, dame de Fayel, était l'amante de Raoul de Coucy. Ce dernier, avant de mourir en Terre Sainte chargea son écuyer d'emporter son coeur auprès de sa dame. Mais le messager fût surpris par le mari de Gabrielle, qui pour se venger lui fit servir à table le coeur de son amant. Inconsolable, Gabrielle de Vergy se laissa mourir de faim.

Cette scène ne peut pas être inspiré de l'opéra Gabrielle de Vergy de Donizetti, créé en 1826 seulement, mais plutôt des multiples romans et pièces de théâtre ayant mis en scène Gabrielle de Vergy et Raoul de Coucy depuis la tragédie Gabrielle de Vergy de Pierre Laurent Buirette de Belloy (1770).
