‘Cavalier Troops Mustering outside the Guildhall, Exeter’ by John Joseph Barker, 1886. This oil on canvas depicts Cavalier troops (Royalists supporting King Charles I during the English Civil War 1642-1648) in what is quite a dark image outside the Exeter Guildhall, a building still highly recognisable today on the High Street.

Barker (1824-1904) was a British artist who painted historical landscape scenes.
