La Catedral de San José es una Catedral Católica, sede de la archidiócesis de Hanói. La iglesia fue construida en 1886 en el estilo neo-gótico durante la primera ocupación francesa de la ciudad, inspirada en Notre Dame de París. La iglesia es un lugar de reunión para la amplia comunidad católica de Hanói y también es una parada habitual de los turistas. Para construir la iglesia, los franceses derribaron la antigua pagoda Bao Thien, que ocupaba ese lugar desde hacía más de 800 años. El contraste entre los dos edificios religiosos era espectacular. La torre, la nave y la forma de cruz neogóticas de la catedral de San José son claramente europeos. Con sus 64,5 metros de longitud y los 31,5 metros de altura de sus campanarios, se trata de una estructura imponente. A la iglesia se accede por la puerta lateral y no por la entrada principal. En su interior, las ventanas con vidrieras y los murales religiosos conservan el estilo tradicional europeo del exterior. En cambio los pasillos, los muros y el altar están decorados con elementos de la tradición vietnamita. Durante muchos años no se celebraron los servicios por polémicas entre el Partido Comunista de Vietnam y el Vaticano, pero en 1990 se reinstauraron con mucho éxito. Se celebran oficios religiosos durante toda la semana y a menudo la iglesia se llena de fieles. |
