| Description |
Images of various playing cards shows how they're trimmed or punched in order to deface them and prevent them from being intentionally or accidentally in any future play in the casino. It's often assumed to prevent them from being used by cheating players, but unless a crooked dealer is involved, its impossible for players of casino card games to "load" decks in play with additional cards. Regardless of the game, cards are dealt to the players by the dealer. The players never handle decks and cards returned to the dealer are discarded or counted as they're returned to the deck. Giving away defaced and discarded decks is basically unknown since some casinos consider it poor business practice to give away the necessary equipment for players to play at home rather than at a casino. Others view free cards as a potential "trigger" for problem gamblers. The decks are typically marketed and sold as "souvenirs" and although buyers sometimes do purchase them for cheap cards to use at home, casino cards are typically cheap, low-quality cards that do not stand up to "hard use" like quality name-brand playing cards do. Because they're clipped or punched, they're "unofficial" and serious players generally won't use them for play. They're useful for practice shuffling, dealing, card tricks, as "toy" decks for children to play with, building houses of cards, etc. Usually the defaced decks sell for 25-50% of retail prices for a poker deck of quality cards from companies like Hoyle or Bicycle. |
