Summary

Description
English: Danish explorer Jens Munk's 1619-20 Winter Harbour on the western shore of Hudson Bay, as shown on French writer Isaac La Peyrère's map Carte de Groenland (1647). The location, indicated by two ships and the French name Port d'hyver de Munck, is placed about five degrees too far north, an error that following mapmakers would perpetuate for decades. The name of the surrounding region, Nouveau Danemarc ("New Denmark"), is the French translation of Nova Dania, the name given by Munk in his voyage account of 1624 (see title page), but which he did not put on the accompanying map. Following La Peyrère, the name would be found on many maps, translated into various languages, but it never came in general use and became obsolete during the 18th century.
