| Description |
Nederlands: foto. Nederlands-Indië is wel een 'plurale' samenleving genoemd (tegenwoordig zouden we het misschien een multiculturele samenleving noemen). Dat kwam vooral duidelijk naar voren bij de rechtspraak. In de hele Archipel hadden groepen mensen met diverse rechtspluralisme te maken, dat wil zeggen dat er meer dan één rechtsstelsel voor hen gold. Zo was er in veel streken sprake van ongeschreven gewoonterecht (adat of adatrecht) naast islamitische rechtsregels. Verder was er soms op schrift gesteld vorstenrecht, zoals op Java. Tenslotte hadden de Nederlanders hun eigen recht meegebracht. Bij zoveel tegelijkertijd geldende rechtssystemen waren gemengde rechtbanken, zoals op de foto, dan ook normaal. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
