Nederlands: Negatief. Ook op Sumatra verschenen de spoorwegen. Echter, net als het wegennet kwam het spoor later dan op Java en ontstond er geen geïntegreerd net, terwijl de totale lengte van het net bij lange na het niveau van Java niet bereikte. Omdat Sumatra ook veel minder dicht bevolkt was dan Java, scoorde Sumatra wat betreft het aantal kilometers spoorlijn per aantal inwoners echter toch nog hoger dan Java. Er waren drie spoornetten, namelijk in het noorden (Atjeh, Sumatra's Oostkust), het midden (Sumatra's Westkust) en het zuiden (Lampong, Palembang). De lijn op de foto, vanuit Padang, was vooral aangelegd voor het transport van kolen van de Ombilinmijnen. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
