Nederlands: Hardhouten reliëf met een portret van Murtala Mohammed een bekende voormalige Nigeriaans militair, politicus en staatshoofd. Het reliëf is niet ouder dan 1976 daar de tekst spreekt 'The late gen.Murtala', en de generaal overleed in 1976, hij werd omgebracht in een mislukte staatsgreep.
Het reliëf is in 1995 aangeschaft op de Koninginnedag markt te Amsterdam en moet dus gemaakt zijn tussen 1976 en 1995 en naar alle waarschijnlijkheid in de eerste jaren na zijn dood toen zijn faam het hoogst was, na zijn overlijden: hij werd omgebracht in een mislukte staatsgreep. Wat het reliëf interessant maakt is het feit dat het hier een portret in hout betreft, portretten van staatshoofden en politici zijn talrijk maar in hout daar zijn er maar weinig van bekend. Het portret vormt de conventies van een formeel statiefotoportret. Ook een verre echo van Beninplaquettes valt niet uit te sluiten. De oorspronkelijke functie is niet duidelijk. Het valt niet simpelweg in de categorie souvenirs. Het lijkt waarschijnlijker dat het gemaakt is voor de lokale markt, als een aandenken aan een vermoord leider. |
