| Description |
Nederlands: Repronegatief. Atjeh was een van de sultanaten waarmee de VOC rond 1600 in contact was gekomen. Dat was beide partijen slecht bevallen. Atjeh bleef voor de Nederlanders ook in de 19e eeuw een lastige buur. In 1873 besloot men in Batavia dat er tegen de sultan van Atjeh moest worden opgetreden en daarmee was de Atjeh Oorlog een feit. De oorlog zou met onderbrekingen tot 1912 duren. Ook daarna flakkerde het verzet tegen de koloniale overheid nog van tijd tot tijd op, bijvoorbeeld in de jaren dertig. In 1898 begon een beslissende fase in de oorlog, want toen werd kolonel J.B. van Heutsz tot Gouverneur van Atjeh benoemd. Hij beëindigde de oorlog voorlopig in 1903. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
